The book In the Country of Shadows, by writer Aguinaldo Silva, will be published in an English-language series. The information was released this Wednesday, 10th, by the website Deadline.
The plot tells the story of two Portuguese soldiers who live a forbidden romance in Olinda, in the captaincy of Pernambuco, at the beginning of the 17th century, and covers themes typical of the Brazilian colonial period.
Silva is overseeing the adaptation and will be one of the producers, with Pedro Vasconcelos as director. He was also responsible for directing Império (2014-2015), one of the soap operas written by the playwright.
Despite being spoken in English, the series will have a cast made up of Brazilian and Portuguese actors. Production will be recorded on location in both countries and is expected to begin in early 2024.
“We sought to develop the love between our protagonists in a lyrical scenario that awakens in the audience the same empathy as any other story starring a heterosexual couple,” Guto Colunga, director of Brazilian production company Diosual Entertainment, which will produce the series, told Deadline.
To date, the project has not been associated with any television channel or streaming service and has no premiere date.
