In the Country of Shadows: Aguinaldo Silva's book will be adapted into an English-spoken series.

Story follows gay soldier couple during the colonial period

Written by Aguinaldo Silva (Império), the book In the Country of Shadows will receive a television adaptation recorded in English and produced by the playwright. Directed by Pedro Vasconcelos and written by Luiz Felipe Petruccelli, Land of Shadows will be recorded on location in Portugal and Brazil. The cast, which has not yet been announced, will be made up mainly of Brazilian and Portuguese actors (via Deadline).

“We seek to involve the love between our protagonists in a lyrical scenario that awakens in the public the same level of empathy as any story starring a heterosexual couple”, stated Guto Colunga, producer of Land of Shadows and founder of Diosual Entertainment, a national label focused on series and films with international appeal. “We want viewers to feel more than the virility we associate with Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist in Brokeback Mountain in our two Portuguese soldiers, we want them to experience the beauty, purity and intensity that stood out so much in the romance of Romeo and Juliet

.” In the Country of Shadows follows two Portuguese soldiers in the captaincy of Pernambuco, at the beginning of the 17th century. The series will also address topics such as the persecution of New Christians, violence against women and the relationship between a farmer's wife and one of his slaves.

For now, no names have been confirmed for the cast. Land of Shadows does not yet have a broadcaster or scheduled release date.
